The following is from the book A Century of Christmas Memories 1900-1999:
"Christmas may have been a bit flashier during the materialistic eighties, with the stock market booming and halls decked to the hilt. Americans shopped till they dropped, phoned home, played Pictionary, triple dog-dared each other, and celebrated the December 1989 dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Santa brought a sleighful of colorful characters for under the tree, including Smurfs, Gremlins, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Pound Puppies and Cabbage Patch Dolls. Yuletides were made more fun by E.T. toys, Rubik's Cubes, and Super Mario World, but the spirit of the season resonated to the Polar Express, the heartwarming children's book about the power of belief."
