Christmas 1970s

The following is from the book A Century of Christmas Memories 1900 - 1999:

"Remembering The 1970s"

"The kaleideoscopic seventies swirled with dramatic political events. John Lennon's Happy Christmas (War is Over) song precedes Nixon's Christmas Bombing of North Vietnam the following year, which shocked Americans. beleaguered by Watergate, Nixon would resign a year before the war's end in 1975. On the lighter side, Albert Finney's 1970 portrayal of Scrooge wins him the Golden Globe, and a cultural craze is kicked off by a movie that began 'A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....' Yuletide was celebrated to the beat of Jose Feliciano's Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas, Darling [by the Carpenters], and yes, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer [by Elmo and Patsy]. Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments and Pet Rocks became hot collectibles, and Nerfballs, Dungeons and Dragons, The Snowman picture book, and fledgling video games were holiday hits."
